Hand-tufted rugs are NOT handmade rugs – don’t mix hand-tufted with handmade!

When I search online for Handmade rugs or Oriental rugs, I often end up on websites with a “really nice looking” rug at a “really cheap” price! That’s where I get suspicious and discover that what some websites call handmade rugs are NOT at all handmade but “hand-tufted rugs” made using a “tufting gun”.

Hand spinning the wool – rug making

A good part of the rug manufacturing time is spent by preparing the material (silk or wool) to be used. Before knotting a carpet, the weaver prepares its materials – wool or silk. The wool used is important as it affects the touch and feel of the final rug – and its quality.
